NIO Logs 120 Millionth Battery Swap as Fifth-Gen Stations Go Live

Takeaways
  • NIO hit 120 million cumulative battery swaps and activated its 4,000th swap station.
  • First batch of fifth‑gen swap stations launched, now servicing NIO, ONVO and firefly vehicles.
  • Swap network delivered 6.35 billion kWh, saving users ~RMB31.2 billion and 99.91 million wait hours.

On Aug. 7, NIO announced that cumulative battery swap services across its network had surpassed 120 million.

On the same day, NIO officially put its 4,000th battery swap station and the first batch of its fifth-generation battery swap stations into operation.

For the first time, the new stations support battery swaps for users of all three NIO brands — NIO, ONVO and firefly — further expanding the network’s service coverage.

NIO built its first battery swap station in May 2018 and completed its first battery swap service the same year.

Over the past eight years, its swap network has expanded from pilot operations in a handful of cities to major urban areas and expressways across China.

To date, NIO has built a total of 9,166 charging and battery swap facilities, including 4,006 battery swap stations, 5,160 charging stations and 29,801 charging piles.

NIO’s highway battery swap station

Along China’s expressway network, the company has deployed 1,049 highway battery swap stations covering 550 cities

This forms a nationwide expressway swap network spanning “nine north-south corridors, 11 east-west corridors and 16 major city clusters.”

It has also established 88 scenic charging routes and plans to expand the number to 100 this year.

According to NIO, cumulative electricity delivered through battery swaps has reached 6.35 billion kWh, equivalent to the annual household electricity consumption of more than 3.17 million families.

Compared with conventional charging, the battery swap network has saved users approximately 99.91 million hours of waiting time in total, or about 83 hours per user on average.

Compared with the fuel costs of gasoline vehicles, it has also reduced users’ cumulative energy expenses by about RMB 31.2 billion ($4.61 billion), or roughly RMB 26,000 ($3,843) per user.

The network’s accessibility has also continued to improve. More than 80% of NIO users can now access a battery swap station within a 3-km radius of either their home or workplace.

NIO’s battery swap accessibility

Battery swapping has long been a defining element of NIO’s infrastructure strategy, with the company continuing to expand its “chargeable, swappable and upgradeable” energy replenishment ecosystem.

As ONVO and firefly continue to expand their product lineups, sharing one battery swap network across multiple brands has become an increasingly important way to improve operational efficiency.

The continued expansion of NIO’s energy infrastructure has also coincided with rising vehicle deliveries. NIO delivered 35,934 vehicles in July, up 71.0% year on year.

In the first seven months of 2026, the company delivered 227,057 vehicles, up 68.0% from a year earlier and a record high for the period.

Deliveries by the NIO, ONVO and firefly brands all reached new highs for the January-July period.
