On Aug. 28, Xiaomi SkyNomad and XCMG Group released a video of an extreme towing challenge focused on the strength of vehicle seat rails.
The video showed a Xiaomi SkyNomad vehicle successfully towing a 55-ton mining truck and an N90 Max on a wet, slippery surface using two tow ropes secured to the seats.
According to data released at the test site, the total towing load reached 57.8 tons, roughly 20 times the curb weight of an N90 Max. The seat rails remained fully functional after the challenge.
The test focused not on powertrain performance but on the structural strength of the seat system itself.
The SkyNomad N90 Max uses reinforced 7-series aluminum alloy for its seat rails, with the company claiming a 9% increase in tensile strength over conventional 7-series aluminum alloy.
Each rail has a locking strength of 54,000 N and a maximum peel strength of 57,000 N. The rails have also undergone 15,000 sliding cycles at temperatures ranging from -20°C to 60°C.
The seat rails are also fundamental to the N90 Max’s spacious interior design.
Built on Xiaomi’s Kunlun platform, the vehicle features a flat floor running continuously from front to rear, with six aviation-grade aluminum rails.
The longest rail measures 1,938 mm, while the second- and third-row seats each offer 900 mm of sliding travel.
In terms of product positioning, the N90 Max is not a conventional hardcore off-road vehicle.
The new model uses a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive range-extender powertrain, with peak motor outputs of 210 kW at the front and 100 kW at the rear. It accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds and has a top speed of 190 km/h.
The towing test was primarily intended to demonstrate the strength of the seat mounting structure and the vehicle’s load-bearing capability, rather than prove that the vehicle can sustain towing loads of a similar magnitude.
The Xiaomi SkyNomad N90 Max opened for presales on July 30 at RMB 299,900 ($44,620), with its official launch scheduled for early September.
The two SkyNomad models, however, are entering a range-extender market that is showing signs of cooling.
According to China Passenger Car Association data, wholesale sales of range-extended vehicles totaled about 504,000 units in the first half of 2026, down 13.1% YoY.
EREV sales fell 25.2% YoY to 94,000 units in June, reducing the segment’s market share to 6.4%.
Meanwhile, Xiaomi Auto continues to rapidly expand deliveries.
According to Xiaomi’s latest financial report, revenue from smart EVs and other innovative businesses reached RMB 23.9 billion ($3.56 billion) in the second quarter of 2026, up 15.9% YoY.
Xiaomi delivered 104,000 vehicles during the quarter, up 28.2% YoY. First-half deliveries totaled about 185,000 units.
Its smart EV, AI and other innovative businesses still posted a loss of RMB 2.6 billion ($387 million), narrowing from RMB 3.1 billion ($461 million) in the first quarter.
