Dongfeng’s 350Wh/kg Solid-State Battery to Debut in Oct, Hit Vehicles in Q4

Dongfeng Group’s in-house 350Wh/kg hybrid solid-battery will officially debut in October and enter mass production for vehicle applications in Q4 2026, said You Zheng, deputy general manager of Dongfeng Motor Group, at the 2026 Aggregated Intelligent Industry Ecosystem Forum.

The 350Wh/kg solid-state battery features Dongfeng’s in-house technologies across the full development chain, covering electrodes, solid electrolytes and battery pack integration. The battery has already reached mass production readiness.

The battery has also completed low-temperature, high-temperature and safety validation tests. Earlier in 2026, a test vehicle equipped with the battery completed more than 70 tests in Mohe, China’s northernmost city. The battery maintained over 74% remaining capacity at -30°C. During high-temperature tests, it showed no signs of fire or explosion at 170°C.

The progress marks Dongfeng’s shift from solid-state battery technology validation to large-scale vehicle deployment.

In July, Zhang Wei, head of Dongfeng’s battery business, said the company plans to launch a 100-unit solid-state battery demonstration fleet by the end of 2026. Dongfeng expects small-scale commercial production around 2030, followed by wider adoption around 2035.

Dongfeng has spent years developing solid-state battery technology.

The automaker established a solid-state battery project team in 2018, adopting a roadmap that moves from semi-solid batteries toward fully solid-state technology. Its research has focused on oxide and polymer composite electrolyte solutions.

Dongfeng completed its first-generation solid-state battery system in 2019. In December 2021, it received China’s first passenger vehicle approval for a solid-state battery application and deployed 50 demonstration vehicles. Those vehicles have now accumulated more than 3.2M km of safe operation.

Compared with conventional liquid lithium-ion batteries, solid-state batteries replace liquid electrolytes with solid electrolytes, potentially improving safety and energy density. However, challenges remain, including solid-solid interface resistance, manufacturing yields and costs. Large-scale commercialization still requires further engineering validation.

Government support is also accelerating solid-state battery industrialization.

On August 21, a solid-state battery application guideline and testing standard proposal for electric vehicle traction batteries, submitted by China, was officially approved as a new project by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It became the world’s first international standard initiative focused on solid-state batteries.

The standard will establish unified requirements for solid-state battery applications, testing procedures and evaluation conditions, with experts from France, South Korea and Japan also participating in development.

Solid-state battery commercialization remains at an early stage. EVTank data showed global solid-state battery shipments reached around 8GWh in 2025, up 51.9% YoY, with hybrid solid-liquid batteries accounting for most market deliveries.

As hybrid solid-liquid batteries move into mass production and all-solid-state batteries advance through pilot production and vehicle validation, EVTank expects global solid-state battery shipments to reach 607.2GWh by 2030, representing a CAGR of more than 130%.
