- BYD’s Yangwang is developing an ultra-luxury executive sedan codenamed “HU,” signaling a move to capture million-yuan buyers amid rising domestic competition and premium brand ambitions.
- The camouflaged prototype shows rear-hinged coach doors, an estimated 5.5m length, roof-mounted LiDAR and possible support for MW flash charging, priced reportedly above RMB 2M (about $298,200).
- The car targets the million-yuan luxury sedan segment occupied by Maextro S800, but limited Yangwang volumes, supply and ADAS chip mass-production timing pose execution and margin risks.
Spy shots of a new executive sedan from BYD’s ultra-luxury EV brand Yangwang have surfaced online. Sources familiar with the matter said the model, internally codenamed “HU,” is positioned as an ultra-luxury executive sedan and could carry a price tag of over RMB 2M ($298.2K).
Although the test vehicle is heavily camouflaged, the images still reveal clear Yangwang family design cues. The front fascia is expected to adopt a Ding-inspired design language shared with the Yangwang U8, using a more imposing and dignified appearance to reinforce its flagship sedan positioning.
The vehicle also features a long and sleek profile. Given its ultra-luxury executive sedan positioning, the model is expected to measure around 5.5 meters in length.
Notably, the test vehicle adopts rear-hinged coach doors, a design commonly seen on Rolls-Royce models. For million-yuan luxury sedans, coach doors not only enhance the sense of occasion for rear passengers but also place higher demands on body structure, manufacturing processes and safety engineering.
The spy shots also show a LiDAR unit mounted on the roof, suggesting the model will likely feature BYD’s latest intelligent driving technologies.
Combined with BYD’s previously unveiled Xuanji Architecture and the Xuanji A3 ADAS chip, which has yet to enter mass production, the flagship sedan could become a key platform for BYD’s advanced driver-assistance technology.
Another image shows the test vehicle near a BYD MW Flash Charging station, suggesting that the model may support the company’s latest fast-charging technology.
Previously, BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li said in an interview with overseas media that the company plans to launch its first vehicle equipped with a solid-state battery next year. While BYD has not disclosed the specific model, the upcoming Yangwang flagship sedan is expected by some industry observers to serve as a potential showcase for the company’s next-generation battery technology.
Currently, China’s first million-yuan luxury executive sedan is the Maextro S800, jointly developed by Huawei and JAC. The model launched in late May 2025 with a price range of RMB 708K-1.388M ($105.6K-$207.0K).
From January to August 2026, the Maextro S800 recorded cumulative sales of 7,939 units, maintaining a leading position in China’s ultra-luxury sedan segment above RMB 700K. Its market performance shows that Chinese automakers have begun gaining a foothold in the million-yuan luxury vehicle market.
Yangwang has already established a premium lineup including the U8L luxury SUV, U9 electric supercar and U7 luxury sedan. Data from the CPCA shows that Yangwang sold 482 vehicles in August 2026, including 205 units of the U7, 150 units of the U8L, 83 units of the U8 and 44 units of the U9.
Overall, Yangwang’s current sales remain limited, and the brand is still in the early stages of building its presence in the high-end market. Whether the newly spotted sedan can help BYD break into the ultra-luxury sedan segment and further elevate Yangwang’s positioning remains to be seen.
