China’s Auto Export Value Jumps 62% to $20.8 Billion in September

Takeaways
  • China accelerated a strategic pivot toward higher-value exports, shifting from volume growth to more NEVs and premium models to capture margin and brand share abroad amid intense price competition.
  • From January–September China exported 8.63 million vehicles (up 52% YoY) worth $149.8 billion (up 54% YoY), with September exports valued at $20.8 billion (up 62% YoY).
  • Direct competitors are established global brands and local EV rivals in overseas markets, but risks include the April 2027 VAT rebate cut, supply‑chain scaling, and potential margins pressure from localization timing.

China’s automotive exports continued to grow in 2026, according to data released by Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

From January to September, China exported 8.63 million vehicles, up 52% year on year, already exceeding its full-year vehicle export volume in 2025.

Exports reached 1.182 million vehicles in September alone, up 55% year on year and 13% month on month, indicating that export growth continued to accelerate.

Export value grew even faster. China’s total vehicle export value reached $149.8 billion in the first nine months, up 54% year on year, with growth returning to a high level.

In September, vehicle exports were valued at $20.8 billion, up 62% year on year and 13% month on month.

This broke with the relatively weak September performance typically seen at the end of the third quarter from 2023 to 2025.

The growth in export value significantly outpaced the increase in export volume, reflecting a continued rise in average export value per vehicle and a growing share of NEVs and higher-end models.

China’s automotive exports are shifting from expansion in volume toward greater value.

Exports of automotive components also recovered. From January to September 2026, China’s automotive component exports totaled $79.6 billion.

This figure represents a 10% year-on-year increase, with growth edging higher than in the same period of 2025.

Monthly automotive component exports reached $9.77 billion in September, up 24% year on year and 7% month on month, rebounding substantially after a pullback in July and August.

Vehicle exports are boosting overseas demand for related components, while rising demand for NEV-related components in overseas markets is providing further support for sustained growth in component exports.

As China’s vehicle exports continue to expand, the policy support framework is also being adjusted.

On October 12, China’s Ministry of Finance and State Taxation Administration issued an announcement stating that the export VAT rebate rate for new energy vehicles would be reduced from 13% to 9% effective April 1, 2027.

With more than six months remaining before the new policy takes effect, automakers and export businesses have time to adjust their orders, pricing and supply-chain plans accordingly.

Cui said China’s vehicle exports were expected to exceed $200 billion this year, with NEV exports also projected to surpass $110 billion. He noted that the associated tax rebates were substantial.

The latest rebate reduction is relatively moderate and is intended to encourage automakers to focus more on brand building and localized operations, while curbing destructive price competition in overseas markets.
