CATL Joins Octopus Energy, Ampace to Deploy Home Energy Storage in Europe

Takeaways
  • CATL has signed an MoU with Octopus Energy and Ampace to develop co-branded residential energy storage in the UK, France and Spain, reflecting a push to capture European downstream demand.
  • CATL will provide technical support and supply-chain coordination, Ampace handles cell, BMS and hardware R&D and manufacturing, and Octopus supplies retail, dynamic-tariff and VPP integration services.
  • Targets grid-edge homeowners and incumbents in retail and storage; execution risks include cross-border rollouts, coordination of supply and manufacturing, regulatory approval and timely VPP and tariff integration.

CATL announced on November 4 that it signed a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU) with UK-based Octopus Energy and Ampace.

Under the agreement, the three companies will jointly explore intelligent residential energy storage solutions for the European market.

Initial operations will focus on the UK, France, and Spain, with plans to introduce co-branded household energy products.

The collaboration extends beyond the development and distribution of residential battery systems to encompass integration with power trading and home energy management.

Under the division of responsibilities, CATL will provide technical support and supply chain coordination.

Ampace will handle the research, development, and manufacturing of battery cells, battery management systems (BMS), and storage hardware.

Octopus Energy will leverage its retail presence in Europe to supply dynamic tariff algorithms and virtual power plant (VPP) onboarding services.

This operational structure aligns with three core pillars of residential storage: hardware manufacturing, price arbitrage algorithms, and customer acquisition.

As the largest electricity retailer in the UK, Octopus Energy brings strong positioning in end-user reach and tariff analytics.

The three partners also plan to utilize household energy storage as a hub for ecosystem-wide integration, linking rooftop solar, smart EV charging, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) systems, and virtual power plants.

This approach configures residential storage assets into dispatchable grid nodes, lowering household electricity expenses while strengthening flexibility and resilience across European power grids.

The agreement expands on an existing relationship between CATL and Octopus Energy.

On June 22 of this year, the two companies announced a joint venture to build a heavy-duty electric truck battery-swapping network across Europe.

The joint venture plans to deploy its initial demonstration swapping stations by 2027, focusing on key UK highway corridors and major logistics ports.

By moving from commercial vehicle battery swapping into home storage, the partnership broadens its scope from transport infrastructure into residential energy consumption.

Europe represents a critical growth market within CATL’s broader energy storage portfolio.

CATL previously entered into multiple partnership agreements with European storage developers including INTILION, Alfen, and Solarpro, covering utility-scale, commercial and industrial, and residential applications.
