Xiaomi Redefines YU7 Design with Three Core Principles

May 22 – Xiaomi Auto officially launched its YU7 model.

However, this luxury SUV, hailed by Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun as “flawless from every angle,” has once again sparked industry-wide debate over allegations of “plagiarism” due to its exterior design similarities to the Ferrari Purosangue.

Today, Xiaomi Auto released a video titled “Timeless Design” to further dissect the design highlights of the YU7, emphasizing three key elements.

An infographic showcasing the design ratios of the Xiaomi YU7 SUV, featuring side and front views of a green vehicle. It highlights a 3:1 wheel-to-axle ratio, 2.1:1 wheel-to-height ratio, and 1.25:1 width-to-height ratio.

Beauty of Proportions:
Utilizing parameters such as a 3:1 wheel-to-axle ratio, 2.1:1 wheel-to-height ratio, and 1.25:1 width-to-height ratio, the YU7 achieves a sleek, low-slung silhouette. Combined with a 1.3:1 head-to-body ratio and muscular wide-body lines, it embodies “a century of automotive heritage in luxury.”

Signature Familial Details:
Retaining design elements from the SU7—including the hollowed-out waterdrop headlights and halo taillights—the YU7 introduces new electric inward-folding door handles. Lei Jun specifically emphasized that the YU7 is “not merely an elevated version of the SU7,” but an independently designed SUV.

Vibrant Color Palette:
Three new finishes—Emerald Green, Titanium Metallic, and Lava Orange—were added. The Emerald Green variant employs a dual-layer paint process to mimic the texture of natural gemstones, while Titanium Metallic utilizes large aluminum flakes to create a futuristic sheen.

Since its launch, design controversies surrounding the YU7 have persisted. Recently, Xiaomi’s legal department publicly vowed to crack down on “black PR” campaigns, reaffirming the originality of the YU7’s design patents. For Xiaomi, whether the YU7 can replicate the SU7’s success hinges not only on quelling public skepticism but also on proving the sustainability of its “hit-making formula” through market performance.
