BYD Appoints Former Stellantis Executive as Head of European Light Commercial Vehicle Business

According to Reuters, on June 9, Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD announced the appointment of Gianluca Zampese, a veteran of the automotive industry, as the Head of its European Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) Business, to further expand its presence in the European market. Concurrently, BYD also appointed Gianluca Zampese as the LCV Country Manager for Italy.

Gianluca Zampese, 56, is Italian and possesses over 20 years of experience in the European LCV sector. Zampese joined Fiat (now a brand under Stellantis) in 2005 and held various positions across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. After leaving Stellantis in August last year, he served as the Country Manager for Italy at SAIC Maxus, a brand focused on LCVs under China’s SAIC Motor.

BYD has long intended to build a European executive team composed of automotive industry veterans to support its regional development plans in Europe.

Last October, BYD announced the hiring of Alessandro Grosso, Stellantis’ former vice president for sales of Italy, as BYD’s Country Manager for Italy; Alberto De Aza, Stellantis’ managing director in Spain and Portugal, to lead BYD’s local operations; and former Stellantis UK chief Maria Grazia Davino as the new Regional General Manager for Germany, Switzerland, Poland, Austria, and the Czech Republic.

At BYD’s 2024 Annual General Meeting of Shareholders on June 6, Wang Chuanfu, chairman of BYD, elaborated on the company’s two key strategic directions: business internationalization and brand premiumization.

Wang stated that overseas markets are gradually entering a phase of explosive growth, and BYD’s overseas expansion strategy is a core focus for the next three years. He also emphasized that achieving premiumization is a crucial battle BYD must win next, revealing plans to launch its Denza luxury brand in Europe.
