FAW Toyota Debuts bZ5 EV SUV Starting at CNY 129,800 (~$17,900)

On the evening of June 10, FAW Toyota launched its all-new pure-electric SUV bZ5 with a price range of CNY 129,800 to 159,800, offering four trim levels.

Built on Toyota’s e-TNGA pure-electric platform, the bZ5 positions itself as a mid-size electric coupe SUV. Its dimensions measure 4,780×1,866×1,510 mm with a 2,880 mm wheelbase.

The model features a front-mounted single motor delivering 200 kW maximum power and 330 N·m peak torque, achieving 0-100 km/h acceleration in approximately 7.5 seconds. Equipped with BYD FinDreams’ LFP Blade Battery, it offers two capacities: 65.28 kWh (550 km CLTC range) and 73.984 kWh (630 km CLTC range). Supports 90 kW DC fast charging (30%-80% in 27 minutes) and 7 kW AC charging (full charge in ~8.5 hours).

Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) form a core competitive edge. Higher trims feature the Toyota Pilot system powered by Momenta Flywheel Model 5.0, integrating 33 sensors (1 lidar-5 mmWave radars-12 ultrasonic sensors-13 cameras) with 544 TOPS computing power. The system enables over 30 ADAS functions including point-to-point NOA navigation, handling urban scenarios like automatic following, turning, and lane changes.

Comfort amenities include a 10-speaker JBL audio system, 256-color ambient lighting, a 1.44㎡ panoramic roof (blocks 99.98% UV), acoustic glass, and front seats with one-touch recline function. The rear legroom exceeds 950 mm with 520 mm-deep cushions, while the trunk provides 520 L capacity (expandable via 60/40 split-folding rear seats).

As Toyota’s first China-led EV development project, the bZ5 positions itself as a “New Joint-Venture Force” challenging EV startups. Key competitors include the Xpeng G6Leapmotor C10 EV, and Deepal S07 EV.

The bZ5’s launch signifies traditional automakers’ critical counterattack in electrification. By entering the mid-size electric SUV market at the CNY 130,000-class price point, its sales performance will test whether joint-venture brands can regain consumer trust in the intelligent vehicle era.
