BYD Expands Its Overseas Fleet as Global Markets Deliver Strong Performance

Recently, Xiong Tianbo, General Manager of the Sales Division of BYD’s Fangchengbao brand, announced on social media that BYD has officially delivered its fifth car carrier vessel, the “Xi’an”, following the “Pioneer”, “Changzhou”, “Hefei”, and “Shenzhen” ships. The “Xi’an” is now among the largest LNG dual-fuel car carriers currently in global operation. Meanwhile, the sixth ro-ro ship, the “Changsha”, is scheduled to embark on its maiden voyage on June 24.

To address overseas shipping bottlenecks, BYD has ordered eight ro-ro vessels with capacities exceeding 7,000 vehicles since 2022. Two of these are being built by GSI (Guangzhou Shipyard International), while the remaining six are contracted to CIMC Raffles. Deliveries began in early 2024: the “Pioneer 1” and “Changzhou” were put into operation in January and December respectively. On April 22, BYD officially received its fourth dedicated NEV carrier, the “Shenzhen”, at the port of Yizheng in Jiangsu.

As BYD’s fourth operational vehicle transport ship, the “Shenzhen” was built by a shipyard under China Merchants Group. It is 219.9 meters long, 37.7 meters wide, and operates at a service speed of 19 knots. With 16 deck levels and 9,200 standard car spaces, it is currently the largest NEV transport vessel in service worldwide. The ship is powered by the latest LNG dual-fuel clean propulsion system, which significantly enhances energy efficiency and emissions reduction. This ensures more stable and lower-carbon logistics support for BYD’s global NEV deliveries.

The newly delivered “Xi’an” boasts nearly identical specs and performance to the “Shenzhen.” Reports indicate that the seventh ship, “Zhengzhou”, and the eighth, “Jinan”, are expected to enter service in August and September this year. The addition of these vessels will further strengthen BYD’s delivery capacity to key global markets, shorten transit times, and reduce logistics costs.
