The Xiaomi YU7 garnered 240,000 orders immediately upon its launch, with Lei Jun using this event to officially sound the clarion call to challenge Tesla.
After the launch of the Xiaomi YU7, Lei Jun, the founder of Xiaomi, answered questions from the media during a group interview.
He first mentioned that the pre-order numbers for the Xiaomi YU7 were exceptionally high. On the night of the launch, the number of orders grew rapidly. Within just two minutes, the order count surpassed 196,000 units, with 122,000 units confirmed. During the press conference, these numbers seemed to take Lei Jun by surprise. According to the official data later released by Xiaomi, within three minutes of the launch, the number of confirmed orders surpassed 200,000 units. Within 18 hours of going on sale, the number of locked orders had exceeded 240,000 units.

This result is unprecedented in the global automotive market.
When discussing sales and potential market performance, Lei Jun acknowledged that although Xiaomi YU7 faces fierce competition, particularly from Tesla’s Model Y, he remains confident about the performance of the YU7. Lei Jun stated that he had told the internal team the day before, “As long as it performs better than last year’s SU7, that’s enough.” However, the results far exceeded expectations. “I feel quite excited about getting this many orders; it’s way beyond my imagination,” he said.
Lei Jun also emphasized that Xiaomi had made significant efforts in terms of quality and safety for the YU7. A total of 653 vehicles were used for testing before launch, covering a total of 6.5 million kilometers. Lei Jun himself participated in two long-distance trips from Beijing to Shanghai.

He also revealed that the YU7 comes standard with advanced driver assistance hardware, including a complete end-to-end system, and is equipped with 10 million clips of intelligent driving data, which strongly supports the vehicle’s intelligent driving system.
In addition, Lei Jun disclosed some information about Xiaomi’s future developments. For instance, the upcoming Xuanjie O2 chip, which Xiaomi is developing in-house, will be considered for use in vehicles. “The first generation mainly validated the technology, and the technology is so impressive it’s hard to believe,” he said. “The next step will definitely be to develop our own four-in-one pre-controller to master all the related technologies and prepare for the integration of Xiaomi’s self-developed chips in future cars.”
Talking about the media environment in the era of digital influence and Xiaomi’s recent challenges in the public opinion sphere, Lei Jun stressed that to navigate the changes of this era, Xiaomi must do several things—first and foremost, be cautious with words. “Every word must be extremely accurate. We need to improve our accuracy and do things well because any flaws could be magnified. I think this is the most important thing we need to focus on.”

When discussing the development of Xiaomi automobiles, Lei Jun confirmed that Xiaomi will focus on technological investment to help Chinese new energy vehicles reach world-class standards. Xiaomi will also focus on quality improvement, push for high-end development, and adhere firmly to the policy of avoiding internal competition. Additionally, Xiaomi is committed to responding to national strategies and promoting the growth of the local supply chain.
