NIO’s New ES8 Adds 30km More Range Than Its Predecessor

NIO’s new ES8 switches to a 900V architecture, extending its range to 635 km and supporting 5C fast charging.

The next-generation NIO ES8 has appeared in the latest batch of the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s (MIIT) exemption list for new energy vehicles, signaling its upcoming launch. As the third-generation model of NIO’s flagship seven-seat SUV, the new ES8 is slated for official debut at NIO Day 2025, scheduled for late September.

Compared to the current version, the revamped ES8 features notable upgrades across multiple dimensions, including battery capacity, electrical architecture, and overall vehicle size. According to publicly disclosed data, the new ES8 will be equipped with a 102 kWh battery pack, delivering a CLTC range of 635 km—approximately 30 km more than its predecessor. This gain in range is attributed to improved battery energy density and enhanced energy efficiency, rather than changes to the powertrain.

Notably, the new ES8 will be among the first NIO models to adopt the company’s next-gen 900V electrical architecture, supporting 5C ultra-fast charging. In theory, the vehicle can replenish over 250 km of range in just five minutes. Coupled with NIO’s in-house 600 kW peak power DC fast-charging infrastructure and its established battery swap network, the vehicle addresses a critical concern in China’s EV market—charging anxiety.

The model also sees a significant expansion in physical dimensions. The updated ES8 measures 5,280 mm in length, 2,010 mm in width, and 1,800 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,130 mm—offering a more spacious cabin, particularly in the third row, and allowing greater flexibility for various seating configurations. It is widely expected that both five- and seven-seat versions will be available, with the five-seat variant possibly replacing the underperforming ES7.

The new ES8 will retain the same dual-motor setup as the current generation, combining a 180 kW front induction motor with a 340 kW rear silicon carbide permanent magnet motor, delivering a total output of 520 kW. On the intelligent driving front, the vehicle continues to feature NIO’s Aquila Super Sensing system, now backed by in-house developed chips and enhanced by NIO’s proprietary large language model, aiming to close previous gaps in advanced driving capabilities.

Overall, the 2025 ES8 represents a comprehensive upgrade in range, charging efficiency, and intelligent features, rounding out its product competitiveness. According to public data, the second-generation ES8 sold just 7,874 units over the past year, indicating the need for stronger market traction. As NIO continues to offer the similarly three-row ONVO L90 alongside the ES8, a key challenge will be to clearly define the ES8’s flagship positioning and differentiate the two models to avoid internal overlap.
