XPeng G6 Range-Extended Version Spotted for the First Time, Built on 800V Platform

The XPeng G6 extended-range version accelerates the rollout of the Kunpeng system, promoting the parallel development of dual powertrains across multiple platforms.

On July 18, spy shots of the XPeng G6 range-extended version surfaced online, revealing a heavily camouflaged test vehicle parked at a gas station, apparently preparing to refuel.

Rumors of range-extended versions for XPeng’s G6 and P7 models have been circulating since March. Sources familiar with the matter revealed that XPeng has already planned at least five range-extended models, aiming to deploy them across its E, F, and H platforms. Most of the company’s upcoming models are expected to adopt a dual approach—offering both pure electric and range-extended powertrains.

The G6 range-extended version is widely regarded as a key follow-up project after the XPeng X9 MPV, signaling the company’s accelerating shift toward multi-powertrain offerings.

XPeng’s entry into the range-extender segment is relatively recent. As early as 2022, the company debated between pursuing “low-cost” or “multi-power” strategies. The Mona sub-brand was the first to take shape under this strategic pivot.

However, the booming range-extender market in 2024 has prompted a strategic reassessment. Brands such as Li Auto, AITO (Wenjie), and Leapmotor have consistently topped sales charts, while Avatr’s switch to range extenders has led to a notable recovery in its performance. These developments have encouraged XPeng to re-evaluate the potential of the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) path.

In November last year, XPeng officially unveiled its “Kunpeng Super Electric System,” marking its formal entry into the range-extended space. The system is built on an 800V high-voltage silicon carbide platform and integrates a suite of advanced technologies, including a 5C ultra-fast charging AI battery, a silicon carbide-based coaxial electric drive, and a quiet range extender engine. The platform enables a pure electric range of up to 430 km and a combined range exceeding 1,400 km.

The debut of the G6 range-extended version could represent the first real-world application of this system.

XPeng has yet to announce the launch timeline or pricing details for the G6 EREV. For reference, the current all-electric G6 starts at RMB 176,800 ($24,600). Industry watchers anticipate that the range-extended model could be priced even lower, putting pressure on value-focused brands such as Leapmotor and Deepal. Meanwhile, a range-extended G9—XPeng’s more premium SUV—could drop to the RMB 200,000 ($27,800) range, positioning itself as a high-spec, low-price rival to mid-tier offerings from AITO and Li Auto.

According to XPeng CEO He Xiaopeng, range-extended and pure electric drivetrains are not mutually exclusive, but complementary solutions tailored to different user needs. Whether XPeng’s move into the EREV segment can become its “second growth engine” remains to be seen.
