BYD’s 13 millionth new energy vehicle rolled off the production line less than eight months after the company hit the 10 million mark.
On July 21, BYD officially announced its 13 millionth new energy vehicle (NEV) rolled off the production line.
Unlike previous milestones, this time the symbolic vehicle is not a volume-selling mid-range model but the U7, a flagship electric sedan from BYD’s high-end brand Yangwang. This marks not only a new production milestone but also signals BYD’s ambition to climb toward the top of the market pyramid.

Looking back at BYD’s mass production history, the pace has been accelerating dramatically. From the rollout of its first new energy vehicle in 2008 to reaching five million units, it took a full 15 years. However, it took just two years to go from five million to ten million. Even more astonishing, the leap from ten million to thirteen million happened in less than eight months:
- 5 millionth vehicle (August 2023): Denza N7, marking initial success in the mid-high-end segment.
- 10 millionth vehicle (November 2024): Denza D9, showcasing flagship technologies.
- 13 millionth vehicle (July 2025): Yangwang U7, targeting the million-yuan ($140,000) high-end market.
As production speeds up, milestone models are also becoming increasingly premium. The shift from Denza to Yangwang reflects BYD’s strategy of pushing upmarket.
The Yangwang U7 is not just a flagship electric sedan with 1,300 horsepower and 0–100 km/h in 2.9 seconds. It’s also the first mass-production model to feature BYD’s “fully digital chassis”, integrating cutting-edge technologies like DiSus-Z suspension and the e4 platform. It aims to establish a technological moat through intelligence, performance, and luxury. The four-seat version is priced at ¥708,000 ($99,100) while the five-seat version is priced at ¥628,000 ($87,900).

Choosing the U7 as the symbolic 13 millionth vehicle underscores BYD’s commitment to its premium brand Yangwang. Compared to the mid-range Denza or Ocean series, Yangwang serves as a technological flagship, showcasing the company’s frontier innovation.
In the first half of 2025, BYD sold 2.146 million vehicles, up 33% year-on-year, continuing its dominance in China’s auto market. The high-end lineup performed especially well: Formula Leopard, Denza, and Yangwang collectively sold 142,000 units, an increase of over 69%. Though still a small portion of total sales, BYD’s premium product ecosystem is rapidly taking shape, building momentum for a broader luxury push.

As “million-unit production” becomes the norm, BYD is constructing its own brand pyramid:
- Base layer: High-volume models like Qin, Seagull, and Song
- Mid-tier: Tech-forward models like Denza D9 and N7
- Top tier: Flagships like the Yangwang U7
This high production capacity gives BYD the scale to support a more complex R&D system, a more diverse product lineup, and models with greater design sophistication. The rollout of its 13 millionth NEV marks more than just a new number—it represents the maturation of BYD’s entire system.
