Leapmotor’s D Series debut model, a full-size SUV, enters summer testing with a projected price of RMB 300,000 ($41,400).
On July 28, automotive blogger @拉面师傅Design released a set of unofficial renderings of the upcoming Leapmotor D-Series SUV, based on recent spy shots. The images offer a glimpse at what could become the brand’s first full-size SUV and a major contender in the over-RMB 300,000 ($41,000) segment.
Shortly after, Leapmotor Vice President Cao Li reshared the images, noting that while the renders were largely speculative, the production model would feature more refined detailing and a significantly more premium finish. He confirmed that the D-Series will be Leapmotor’s flagship SUV, designed to break into the high-end market for the first time.

The renderings suggest a substantial shift in design language from Leapmotor’s existing lineup, with a more squared-off profile and a considerably broader body. The overall aesthetic leans toward a “land-yacht” SUV, emphasizing both size and presence.
Design cues include split headlight clusters flanking a large, enclosed front grille, complemented by Leapmotor’s signature tri-bar LED daytime running lights. A tall hood and prominent front fascia enhance the vehicle’s visual impact, while the simplified side and rear lines, along with a more upright D-pillar, hint at improved interior space—particularly in the third row. The extended front end could also accommodate a larger front trunk, catering to outdoor and adventure-oriented use cases like camping and fishing.

Beyond its bold styling, the D-Series is expected to push the envelope in terms of hardware. Following Leapmotor’s modular platform approach, the vehicle is likely to be offered in both range-extender and all-electric versions. It’s also expected to feature 6-seat and 7-seat configurations, and could come equipped with advanced technologies such as LiDAR sensors, high-level intelligent driving systems, large-capacity batteries, and a spacious third-row comfort package.

Although Cao Li confirmed the D-Series will target the premium segment starting at around RMB 300,000 ($41,000), there’s speculation that Leapmotor may adopt its signature “high-spec-for-less” pricing strategy. In that scenario, the range-extended version could dip to around RMB 200,000 ($27,000), directly challenging Deepal’s S09, while the mainline pure-electric trims would be priced against rivals like the upcoming ONVO L90 and Li Auto’s L8, hovering around the RMB 250,000 ($34,000) mark.
As the second half of 2025 heats up, the competition in the three-row electric SUV segment is intensifying. Leapmotor’s first D-Series SUV is not only positioned to take on the high-end market, but also carries the strategic burden of redefining the brand’s premium aspirations. The model is slated for launch in early 2026. Whether it can replicate the success of the B and C series will largely depend on final pricing and market reception.
