The current Model 3 now features traditional turn signal stalks as standard across all trims.
A retrofit service is available for existing owners of the Refreshed Model 3, priced at RMB 2,499 ($350), including installation), with availability starting mid-September.
On August 19, updates to Tesla China’s official website revealed that the current Model 3 now comes standard with traditional turn signal stalks across all variants, including the Rear-Wheel Drive, Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive, Long Range All-Wheel Drive, and Performance All-Wheel Drive models.
The turn signal stalk is now standard equipment, requiring no additional purchase, and is directly integrated into new vehicle deliveries.
Concurrently, Tesla offers a retrofit service for owners of previously purchased Refreshed Model 3 vehicles, priced at $350 (including installation fees), with sales expected to commence in mid-September.
This configuration change is a direct response to user feedback. In September 2023, the Refreshed Model 3 eliminated physical stalks, removing the commonly equipped turn signal/windshield wiper stalk and stalk-style gear shifter. Instead, gear shifting was moved to the touchscreen, while turn signals and wipers were operated via steering wheel buttons.
This design sparked controversy among many owners regarding usability and safety. For instance, the mismatch between button labels and actual direction after steering wheel rotation was flagged as a potential safety hazard.
Notably, this reintroduction of stalks isn’t Tesla’s first concession. Last year’s Refreshed Model Y also retained physical turn signal stalks.
Coinciding with the return of stalks, Tesla simultaneously strengthened the Model 3’s product lineup.
On August 12, the Model 3 Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive edition officially launched, starting at RMB 269,500 (approximately $37,500), with a CLTC-rated range of 830 km. It now stands as Tesla’s longest-range mass-produced sedan.
Key upgrades include:
- Powertrain: A new 3D6 rear-drive motor delivering 225 kW max power, accelerating 0-100 km/h in 5.2 seconds—0.9 seconds faster than the standard RWD version.
- Battery: An LG Energy Solution 78.4 kWh NCM lithium-ion battery pack, significantly larger than the standard version’s 62.5 kWh LFP battery.
During the same period, the Model 3 Performance variant’s range was upgraded to 647 km, while its price remained unchanged at RMB 339,500 ($47,300).
Behind Tesla’s product adjustments lies intense sales pressure. In H1 2025, Tesla’s global deliveries fell 13.3% year-on-year, with a 5.4% decline in China. More recently, Tesla ranked 7th in China’s July NEV passenger vehicle sales, with overseas markets also seeing significant drops.
