firefly doesn’t just want to build an entry-level EV — it wants to bring “small-car culture” to life.
On August 25, firefly unveiled the Nomad Mellowd Special Edition, limited to 333 units. Pricing starts at RMB 133,800 ($18,710), or RMB 93,800 ($13,120) with the BaaS rental plan.

Compared with the regular versions, the key differences lie in the exterior and detail design: a new body color with unique graphics, multi-spoke alloy wheels, a purple interior, and a purple ambient clock ring in the infotainment system.
The overall style leans toward a more relaxed vibe, aimed at the so-called “urban nomad” lifestyle.
Since its launch, firefly has attracted a user base with a strong passion for customization. A quick search on Chinese social media reveals numerous examples of personalized paint jobs and modifications. For a car priced around RMB 100,000 ($14,000), this kind of owner-driven culture is quite rare.

With the brand now stepping in to offer its own limited-edition paint scheme, it naturally raises the question: will there be more official custom editions in the future?
This points to the emergence of a “small-car culture.” Much like BMW’s MINI, sales volume may not be the only metric that matters—what it truly represents is a group of people and a lifestyle. As a newcomer, firefly could gradually build its own cultural identity if it continues down this path.

In terms of sales, firefly delivered 2,366 units in July, bringing total deliveries to over 10,000 units to date. Over the past few months, deliveries had been constrained by production capacity.
The timing of this Special Edition is notable: in July, NIO’s Chuzhou factory completed a major production line upgrade, effectively removing capacity bottlenecks. Firefly is now entering a ramp-up phase.
There is also a rumor circulating that firefly’s European version may be sold domestically in China. If true, it would further expand the brand’s product offering. However, no official confirmation has been given, and the answer may only come at NIO Day 2025.
