In August, CATL led with 26.45 GWh of power battery installations, capturing a 42.35% market share, followed by BYD with 13.02 GWh and a 20.85% share.
On September 11, the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance released its monthly data for August 2025.
In terms of production, combined output of power and other batteries reached 139.6 GWh in August, up 4.4% month-on-month and 37.3% year-on-year.
For the January–August period, total production stood at 970.7 GWh, marking a 54.3% increase from the same period last year.

Sales also posted strong growth. Total sales in August came to 134.5 GWh, up 5.7% from July and 45.6% year-on-year. Power batteries accounted for 98.9 GWh, or 73.5% of the total, while other batteries contributed 35.6 GWh.
From January to August, cumulative sales of power and other batteries reached 920.7 GWh, up 58.2% year-on-year, including 675.5 GWh of power batteries and 245.2 GWh of other batteries.

Exports maintained their upward trajectory. In August, combined exports of power and other batteries totaled 22.6 GWh, a 23.9% increase year-on-year but down 2.6% month-on-month.
Exports represented 16.8% of total sales, including 15.1 GWh of power batteries and 7.6 GWh of other batteries.
From January to August, exports reached 173.1 GWh, up 48.5% year-on-year, accounting for 18.8% of total sales, with power batteries at 111.5 GWh and other batteries at 61.6 GWh.

Battery installations in vehicles also expanded. August installations reached 62.5 GWh, up 11.9% from July and 32.4% year-on-year.
Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries stood out, with installations of 51.6 GWh, accounting for over 80% of the total and rising 47.3% year-on-year. Ternary batteries recorded 10.9 GWh, or 17.5% of the total, down 10.0% year-on-year.
From January to August, cumulative installations totaled 417.9 GWh, up 43.1% year-on-year, including 340.5 GWh for LFP batteries and 77.4 GWh for ternary batteries.

By vehicle type, battery installations in battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 82.3% in August, up 40.7% year-on-year. Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) held a 17.6% share, up 4.2%, while fuel-cell vehicles (FCEVs) made up just 0.05%, down 52.2% year-on-year.
Over the first eight months, BEVs accounted for 81.8% of installations, up 50.5% year-on-year, PHEVs for 18.2% (up 17.4%), and FCEVs only 0.04% (down 45.8%).

From a corporate perspective, 33 power battery companies recorded installations in the Chinese NEV market in August, two fewer than a year earlier. For the January–August period, 51 companies achieved installations, three more than the same period last year.
CATL led the market in August with 26.45 GWh of installations, securing a 42.35% market share, slightly higher than in July.
BYD ranked second with 13.02 GWh, capturing 20.85% of the market, a slight decline from the previous month.

Cumulatively, CATL’s installations reached 178.16 GWh for January–August, accounting for 42.74% of the total, down from last year, while BYD’s reached 95.21 GWh, or 22.84%, also lower than a year earlier.
Overall, China’s power battery market continued its rapid growth in August, with LFP batteries consolidating their dominance thanks to cost and safety advantages, while CATL and BYD maintained their entrenched lead at the top of the industry.
