AUDI E5 Sportback Starts at $23,590, Is AUDI Showing Sufficient Sincerity This Time?

AUDI E5 Sportback: Official Launch of Audi’s First Model with a Price Range of RMB 235,900 ($33,167)- 319,900 ($44,977)

Co-developed by Audi’s Chinese and German teams, the Audi E5 Sportback is Audi’s most “new-EV-startup-style” product yet.

Even when considering only the explicit features, the new model is packed with configurations currently popular among China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) players, including a highly futuristic interior and exterior design, a full-range 800V platform, an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) co-developed with Momenta, a 100kWh battery delivering a CLTC range of 773km, and a massive 59-inch in-car display.

Rooted in the Audi brand, the AUDI E5 Sportback also inherits Audi’s renowned driving performance. Notably, the Pioneer quattro version, priced at RMB 269,900 ($38,001), marks the first time Audi has integrated its quattro all-wheel-drive system into a new energy vehicle.

With the AUDI brand, Audi seems to be embracing a growing consensus among joint-venture brands in the NEV era: granting Chinese teams greater autonomy to develop vehicles tailored specifically for the Chinese market.

The AUDI E5 Sportback clearly demonstrates Audi’s strong determination to break into China’s NEV market. However, one question lingers: how many consumers are willing to purchase a battery-powered Audi without the iconic four-ring badge, starting at RMB 235,900($33,167)? This is the ultimate question the AUDI E5 Sportback must answer.

“Premium New Force”?

Launched in 2024 as a joint effort between SAIC Group and Audi, the new AUDI brand aims to serve a specific demographic.

This question was first addressed at the pre-sale launch event of the E5 Sportback: a younger audience distinct from traditional Audi buyers. At tonight’s official launch, AUDI reaffirmed this positioning – “built for pioneering individuals”.

AUDI has positioned itself as a “premium new force” in the NEV sector.

In terms of product strength, the E5 Sportback aligns with the “new force” label by catching up with industry trends.

Configurations favored in the NEV market, such as a peak power of 579kW, full-scenario ADAS empowered by Momenta, and a 59-inch in-car display, serve as the basic foundation for AUDI to compete in the market.

To uphold Audi’s premium heritage, establish itself as the “premium new force” it claims to be, and gain an edge in the fiercely competitive market, the E5 Sportback focuses on excelling in the details.

A persistent challenge for traditional premium brands known for driving performance is balancing the handling characteristics of the fuel era with those of the NEV era. The integration of the “full-power quattro” – dubbed “the true all-electric all-wheel drive” – provides a strong boost to the E5 Sportback.

“Just step on the accelerator with confidence; leave the rest to quattro.” In the NEV era, quattro continues to write Audi’s driving legacy.

AUDI states that the E5 Sportback, boasting a peak power of 579kW, peak torque of 800N·m, and a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 3.4 seconds, leverages quattro and Audi’s century-long tuning expertise to achieve torque distribution in just 100ms, allow slight oversteering during high-speed cornering, and proactively intervene by pre-identifying road conditions.

In terms of mechanical quality, the vehicle adopts 285mm-wide rear tires and 245mm-wide front tires. Combined with tuning by German engineers, this setup ensures more stable, safer, and yet flexible body control.

The AUDI E5 Sportback is not merely focused on catching up with new NEV players; it also aims to inherit Audi’s core DNA.

While the German team’s efforts and the integration of quattro are significant, the E5 Sportback’s inheritance and innovation of Audi’s DNA in interior and exterior design – accessible across more variants compared to the quattro system (only available in the mid-to-high-end versions priced at RMB 269,900 and RMB 319,900) – may resonate with a broader user base.

Lights have always been one of Audi’s iconic design elements.

The E5 Sportback combines Audi’s classic coupe and wagon styling, while introducing an exclusive “star diamond light curtain” featuring “ring + triangle” as its core design language. Adorned with 942 LED beads on the front and rear of the vehicle, it inherits Audi’s century-old heritage while showcasing innovative design for the new model.

Inside the cabin, a 30-color hidden gradient ambient lighting system extends throughout, with 4-zone independent control.

In other detailed designs, the E5 Sportback’s electronic exterior mirrors display real-time feeds on extended screens flanking the central control panel, reducing the need for drivers to adjust their visual habits.

The in-car interaction system adopts an iPhone-like design, encompassing a Siri-style voice assistant, central control function interaction logic, and the all-new Audi Smart Island shortcut operating system – a hybrid of physical buttons and touch controls, drawing inspiration from Apple’s Touch Bar.

With the E5 Sportback, AUDI seeks to combine the technological feel and innovation of new NEV forces with Audi’s century-long expertise in delivering premium, detail-oriented experiences. This balance is crucial for the E5 Sportback to convince consumers and gain an advantage in a market crowded with strong competitors.

Is It Competitive Enough?

Unlike the common practice in China’s NEV market where official prices are typically RMB 10,000 – 20,000 lower than pre-sale prices, the official prices of the AUDI E5 Sportback variants remain unchanged from their pre-sale figures. This has sparked mixed opinions about the competitiveness of its pricing.

Is the AUDI E5 Sportback offering enough value? From the perspective of the AUDI brand and its two co-founders (SAIC and Audi), it has broken the convention that electric vehicles from traditional premium brands start above RMB 300,000, lowering the entry threshold to RMB 235,900.

For the two flagship variants, consumers can choose between the Pioneer Plus version (CLTC range of 773km) and the Pioneer quattro version (equipped with the quattro system) – both priced at RMB 269,900 – allowing them to decide based on their specific needs.

Furthermore, the full-scenario ADAS, co-developed by AUDI and Momenta, comes as a standard feature on the E5 Sportback, eliminating the need for additional payment to activate it.

AUDI E5 Sportback

At the very least, from AUDI and Audi’s standpoint, the E5 Sportback has shed many of the “burdens” associated with traditional premium brands and is fully embracing the Chinese market.

However, criticisms persist, as some discerning Chinese consumers remain unsatisfied.

When compared to the currently popular Xiaomi SU7 and the all-new XPeng P7, both of which have starting prices below RMB 220,000 and top-tier prices under RMB 310,000, the E5 Sportback lags behind – the two competitors also offer longer maximum ranges (830km and 820km respectively, versus the E5 Sportback’s 773km).

There is also a consensus that the all-new XPeng P7 outperforms the E5 Sportback in terms of intelligence, while the Xiaomi SU7 has an edge in ecosystem integration. In China’s NEV market, where the “filter” for electric vehicles from traditional premium brands is fading, these advantages allow the two models to compete head-to-head with the AUDI E5 Sportback.

For the E5 Sportback, its chassis tuning and the premium attention to detail in its interior and exterior design may be the key factors in appealing to consumers who value the heritage of established brands and appreciate the E5 Sportback’s unique product strengths.
