Buick Electra L7 Debuts: Taking Cues from NEV Startups in New Energy Push

Claiming to define the luxury sedans of the new energy era, has Buick succeeded?

The Originator of Extended-Range Hybrid Technology Aims to Prove Itself Again in the New Power Era.

Four months ago, SAIC-GM Buick launched its new high-end new energy sub-brand—Electra, focusing on the high-end new energy market above RMB 300,000 ($42,100).

At that launch event, Buick also unveiled the “Xiaoyao” super-integrated vehicle architecture (a million-level platform defined and developed in China), a product plan covering sedans, SUVs, and MPVs, as well as the “True Dragon” Range-Extended System.

On the evening of September 15th, the L7 made its debut as the first model of the Electra family. However, the price—the biggest suspense—will not be revealed until September 28th.

With a claimed 28 years of R&D experience in “understanding China’s roads best” and chassis technology, plus the label of “the originator of extended-range technology”, Buick claims to have defined a luxury sedan for the new energy era. But has it really delivered?

Whether Buick has truly delivered on this ambition remains to be seen.

What Defines Buick’s Luxury?

Posture and design have always been crucial for luxury sedans, so let’s start with the exterior of the Buick Electra L7.

As a C-class mid-to-large sedan with an overall length exceeding 5 meters and a wheelbase of 3,000 mm, the Buick Electra L7 exudes an aura and features a side profile that aligns with the public’s perception of high-end, luxury vehicles.

Explicit luxury stems from meticulous detailing—for example, the “Galaxy Starry Sky Wing” headlights (claimed to be the same as those on million-level luxury cars) and the “Star Trail Floating Light Wing” taillights, which retain the design of the concept car.

Paired with frameless doors optimized for quietness (NVH), the Buick Electra L7 boasts a sleek and elegant sedan stance. While some may think frameless doors conflict with “ultra-quietness”, quietness is a century-old heritage of the Buick brand.

Specifically, the Buick Electra L7 is equipped with 6mm acoustic noise-canceling glass (claimed to be the “thickest in its class”) and three layers of door seals (the most in its class).

Officially, it meets a “library-level quietness standard”—meaning the NVH performance of its frameless doors is optimized to match that of framed doors.

Of course, quietness is just one of the enhanced experiences.

Its mid-to-large size lays the foundation for a premium interior experience: the cabin height of the Buick Electra L7 reaches 1.14 meters, with the usable legroom for front and rear passengers at 1.91 meters and the average effective shoulder space at 1.37 meters.

When it comes to seating, the Buick Electra L7 is fitted with four “Rolls-Royce-style” full-function floating seats, equipped with ventilation, heating, and massage functions—emphasizing equal comfort for both front and rear passengers.

The Avenir co-pilot seat is a signature feature of the Buick Electra L7, supporting zero-gravity mode and a four-way electric leg rest. Officially, it adheres to NASA’s dual 120° “true zero-gravity” seating definition.

Buick previously held a special offline event where random passersby conducted a blind test comparison. The result? The Buick Electra L7 claimed a landslide victory with 98 votes over a certain “luxury comfort benchmark model”.

In terms of intelligence, the Buick Electra L7 is the world’s first vehicle to be equipped with Qualcomm’s latest SA8775P cockpit chip, with an AI computing power of 72 TOPS. Officially, this is twice that of the 8295 chip currently widely used in the market.

Additionally, it supports smartphone projection for three major systems (Android, iOS, and HarmonyOS, including HiCar, CarPlay, and CarLink), along with smart features such as one-click vehicle preparation via the mobile app—a far cry from the “old-era Buick”.

Particularly in the fiercely competitive field of intelligent driving assistance (a key battleground in China’s NEV market), the Buick Electra L7 is among the first models to be equipped with the “Xiaoyao Zhixing” advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), built on Momenta R6’s “Flywheel Large Model”. This fills the “last gap” in the intelligence of joint-venture NEVs.

Frankly speaking, if we set aside the “Buick” brand, the Electra L7 is more like a pure “new power”-style C-class NEV sedan.

Compared with models like the BYD Han L and even traditional joint-venture counterparts in the same class, this has become its unique competitive advantage.

Beyond luxury and intelligence, the more fundamental aspect lies in its electric powertrain.

How Does Buick—the “Originator of Extended-Range Hybrid”—Claim to “Redefine Extended-Range Technology”?

What Gives the “True Dragon” Range-Extended System Its Confidence?

When Buick launched the Electra brand, it also reintroduced the “True Dragon” Range-Extended System.

“True Dragon” Range-Extended System

The technical advantages of the “True Dragon” Range-Extended System can be understood by addressing two major pain points of existing extended-range systems:

Short all-electric range (AER) for mainstream extended-range vehicles: Most extended-range cars in the mainstream price segment have an AER too short to cover daily commuting needs, leading to frequent charging.

The “True Dragon” Range-Extended System in the Buick Electra L7 delivers an AER of 302 km. This means that with a full charge, it can basically cover five workdays of short-distance commuting, eliminating the hassle of frequent recharging during the week.

For comparison, the BYD Han L DM-i and Chery Fulwin A9L have an AER of 200 km and 193 km, respectively.

Significant performance degradation in “low-battery mode”: Extended-range vehicles often suffer from noticeable performance drops when the battery is low—a phenomenon commonly referred to as “low-battery feeling”.

Buick Electra L7

In contrast, the Buick Electra L7 is equipped with a 1.5T hybrid-specific engine and Ultium 2.0 hybrid-specific high-performance battery, focusing on minimizing performance degradation.

The former achieves a fuel-to-electric conversion rate of up to 3.6 kWh/L, while the latter can still provide a discharge capacity of 260 kW/7.8C even in low-battery mode—sufficient to meet the motor’s power demand while balancing fuel efficiency and quietness.

Officially, the acceleration time difference of the Buick Electra L7 between full-battery and low-battery modes is only 0.08 seconds.

Coupled with a large 60L fuel tank and a combined range of over 1,400 km, Buick has positioned the Electra L7 as an all-around plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) focusing on long-range capability.

Although the Buick Electra L7 currently only offers a single-motor configuration, its maximum power of 252 kW is more than sufficient for daily use.

Can Buick Break Free from the “Joint-Venture Label”?

Finally, let’s briefly recap the highlights of the Buick Electra L7:

  • It offers a 302 km AER and an extended-range system focused on high efficiency and quietness, reducing range anxiety and delivering an experience closer to that of a pure electric vehicle (BEV).
  • It features relatively outstanding intelligent cockpit and ADAS configurations for its price range.
  • It boasts “class-leading” luxury interiors and comfort features – a rarity in Buick’s previous product lineup.

Buick Electra L7

It is clear that Buick’s strategy in the smart electric era is to build a car that is “new power enough” while retaining “traditional strengths”. The Electra L7 may well be its answer after “learning” from new energy startups.

At the same time, the “True Dragon” Range-Extended System of the Buick Electra L7 has taken the lead in occupying the market in the trend of “extended-range vehicles with large batteries”.

The opportunity to “redefine extended-range technology” has fallen to the “inventor of extended-range systems”. Obviously, Buick aims to prove to the market that it deserves a place in the extended-range hybrid market.

Buick’s methodology is clear: it aims to match traditional BBA (BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi) in luxury and comfort, while competing with NEV startups in intelligence and new energy powertrains.

However, Buick’s challenge in the NEV sector lies not only in its products but also in changing the market’s perception of joint-venture NEVs.

Frankly speaking, the Buick Electra L7 has demonstrated considerable sincerity in terms of product strength, offering comprehensive advantages in comfort, cost-effectiveness, and technical configurations. Now, it needs a surprisingly competitive price to make a splash in the market.

More importantly, amid fierce competition and the rising dominance of Chinese domestic brands, Buick will need more time to reverse the public’s “prejudice” against joint-venture NEVs.
