GAC Aion, JD.com and CATL Name New EV ‘Aion UT Super,’ First Unit Auctioned for $11 Million

The Aion UT super, built on the Aion UT platform, introduces major upgrades in driving range, battery-swapping capability, and intelligent connectivity.

On October 23, GAC Aion announced that its co-developed “National Accessible Car,” jointly created with JD.com and CATL, has been officially named “Aion UT super.”

The model is based on the Aion UT platform and targets the mass-market segment. It introduces major upgrades in range, battery system, and smart connectivity — serving as a battery-swapping version of the UT.

Powered by CATL’s “Chocolate” battery swap technology, the Aion UT super features a 500 km range pack — a first among cars in its class — and supports ultra-fast battery replacement in just 99 seconds.

The system allows flexible charging or swapping options, offering users the choice of battery rental or purchase. Real-time battery monitoring ensures safety, and the constant renewal of battery packs eliminates degradation concerns. Currently, CATL’s “Choco-Swap network exceeds 700 stations across 39 cities in China.

In terms of dimensions, the Aion UT super retains the UT’s platform architecture with a 2,750 mm wheelbase, 905 mm of rear legroom, and 1,385 mm of cabin width — approaching the interior space of a mid-size sedan. The front seats can fold flat into a bed for long-distance rest.

On the intelligent front, the Aion UT super debuts the “GAC Huawei Cloud In-Vehicle System,” which leverages Huawei’s cloud computing power to run large-scale 3A games, stream high-definition videos, and support terabyte-level cloud storage with access to over 20,000 downloadable apps.

Users can scan a QR code to synchronize their smartphone apps directly to the vehicle’s system, solving issues of lag and aging in conventional in-car systems. The model also introduces a “Reverse Sentinel” feature that automatically stops the car when obstacles are detected during reversing to prevent collisions.

Notably, before the model’s official release, the first “National Accessible Car” (# 001) appeared on JD.com’s auction platform. The auction opened for registration at 4 p.m. on October 17 and officially started on October 22 at 2 p.m. with a starting bid of RMB 1 ($0.14).

After four hours of intense bidding, it sold for RMB 78.19 million ($11.0 million), drawing over 260,000 viewers and more than 23,000 bids.

GAC Aion has not yet disclosed official pricing for the Aion UT super. Given the current Aion UT’s retail range of RMB 69,800–101,800 ($9,795–14,300), the new model is widely expected to be priced between RMB 100,000 and 120,000 ($14,100–16,900).
