BYD Xi’an Battery Base Enters Full Production, Targets 16 GWh Capacity

Takeaways
  • BYD completed and started full production at its Xixian battery base in Xi’an, reflecting intensified capacity expansion to alleviate battery shortages and support rapid NEV volume growth.
  • The Qinhan New City site cost RMB 7 billion (about $1.043 billion) and is designed for 16 GWh annually—enough to supply roughly 700,000 NEVs and target RMB 8 billion (about $1.192 billion) output value.
  • The plant supplies second-generation Blade Batteries and flash-charging tech for models like the Seal 08, but ramp timing, progressive capacity release, and wider supply constraints could limit near-term deliveries.

BYD’s new-energy vehicle power battery project in Xi’an’s Xixian New Area has been fully completed and entered production, according to the local government.

The project, located in Qinhan New City, is one of BYD’s power battery production bases in northwest China and will also supply batteries for vehicle production in Xi’an.

Located within the Qinhan Autonomous Driving Industrial Park, the Xixian base covers approximately 1,333 mu and represents a total investment of RMB 7 billion ($1.043 billion).

It mainly comprises production lines for battery cells and packs, along with related supporting facilities.

The project is designed for annual battery production capacity of 16 GWh, enough to supply approximately 700,000 NEVs.

Once fully operational, it is expected to generate annual output value of about RMB 8 billion ($1.192 billion).

The base covers the full battery manufacturing process, from electrode preparation and cell formation to module assembly, battery-pack integration and system testing.

It also uses a manufacturing execution system (MES) for production management.

The project took approximately 10 months from signing to the start of production. On Oct. 17, 2025, the first battery cells rolled off the first production line at the Xixian base.

By March 2026, when BYD unveiled its second-generation Blade Battery and flash-charging technology, the Xixian base had already been included among the first production bases and had begun trial production.

According to the company, the Xixian base is not only one of the first production sites for the second-generation Blade Battery, but also a key manufacturing base for the mass production of its flash-charging technology.

BYD Executive Vice President He Zhiqi previously said capacity for the second-generation Blade Battery at the Xixian base had been ramping up steadily.

The Seal 08, produced at the base, went on sale in July, with mass production progressing as planned.

As the base moves from trial production to full-scale operations, the pace at which its capacity is released will directly affect battery supplies for subsequent vehicle models.

The base is also part of BYD’s broader effort to expand battery production capacity.

At BYD’s June 2026 shareholders’ meeting, Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu said the company’s battery capacity remained insufficient to meet demand, with its 2026 sales performance depending heavily on battery output.

According to Wang, newly added battery capacity is being released progressively at a rate equivalent to roughly 20,000-30,000 vehicles per month, with further capacity expansion planned.
