XPeng Unveils MONA L05 SUV Ahead of Q4 Launch

Takeaways
  • XPeng is adding the larger MONA L05 SUV to its lineup, shifting to capture midsize SUV buyers seeking more space and longer-range options amid intense price competition in China.
  • The L05 measures 4,870 mm by 1,930 mm by 1,636 mm with a 2,940 mm wheelbase, offers 183 kW single-motor BEV with 71.1 kWh LFP (CLTC 615–660 km) and range-extender 1.5L with 37.2 kWh (237–253 km); estimated price RMB 140,000–180,000 (about $20,920–$26,900).
  • The L05 will target rivals like BYD Song Ultra and Leapmotor C11, but execution risks include delivering at scale, maintaining margins in the quoted price band, and meeting Q4 2026 launch and regulatory certification timelines.

On October 12, XPeng announced that the MONA lineup’s second SUV, the L05, would soon make its debut. The company describes it as a “large five-seat SUV for young buyers.”

According to information shared at XPeng’s Q2 earnings briefing, the MONA L05 is scheduled to launch in China in the fourth quarter of 2026, with overseas markets to follow.

Filing data from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) show that the new SUV measures 4,870 mm long, 1,930 mm wide and 1,636 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,940 mm.

Compared with the MONA L03, the L05 is 220 mm longer, 10 mm wider and 36 mm taller, while its wheelbase is 90 mm longer.

The two models share the MONA family design language and powertrain options, with the L05 effectively serving as a larger, longer version of the L03.

The L05 will retain both battery-electric and range-extended powertrain options. The all-electric version uses a single motor with a maximum output of 183 kW.

It is equipped with a 71.1 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, with declared CLTC driving ranges of 615 km, 635 km, 640 km and 660 km, depending on the variant.

The range-extended version features a 1.5-liter range extender rated at a maximum output of 70 kW, paired with a drive motor that also delivers up to 183 kW.

This version has a 37.2 kWh battery pack and offers three declared all-electric range options: 237 km, 245 km and 253 km.

Market estimates put the L05’s potential price range at RMB 140,000–180,000 ($20,920–$26,900).

For comparison, the MONA L03 is priced at RMB 123,800–156,800 ($18,500–$23,430).

If its pricing falls within that range, the L05 will enter China’s highly competitive midsize SUV market, where it is expected to compete with models such as the BYD Song Ultra and Leapmotor C11.

XPeng’s expansion of the MONA lineup also follows the L03’s initial market performance.

Launched in July this year, the MONA L03 recorded more than 14,000 deliveries in September, giving the series an initial sales base.

With a larger body and two powertrain options, the L05 is intended to appeal to buyers who place greater emphasis on cabin space and long-distance travel.

At the group level, XPeng delivered 41,256 vehicles in September, down 0.78% year on year but up 5.5% month on month.
