XPeng’s Robotaxi Business YOYO Secures L4 Autonomous Driving Pilot Permit

Takeaways
  • XPeng secured regulatory approval for L4 demonstration ops for its XPENG YOYO robotaxi, signaling a shift from R&D toward real-world passenger service trials and commercialization push.
  • The YOYO is based on the GX platform with four in-house Turing AI chips delivering 3,000 TOPS, vision-only VLA large model, over 2,200 internal test rides, and driverless rollout planned for 2027.
  • Targets incumbent mobility platforms and European partners, but execution risks include scaling operations, regulatory compliance for passenger service, partner reliance for fleet ops, and meeting 2027 profitability timing.

XPeng Motors announced on October 26 that its Robotaxi business, XPENG YOYO, had secured approval for L4 autonomous driving demonstration operations.

The approval brings the service a step closer to passenger-carrying demonstration operations.

XPENG YOYO’s Chinese name was officially unveiled on October 8.

Its website and ride-hailing mini-program went live at the same time, offering public access to the service on an invitation-only basis.

From naming the service to securing demonstration-operation approval, XPeng is gradually moving its Robotaxi program from technology development into real-world mobility scenarios.

The defining feature of L4 autonomous driving is that, within specified operational design conditions, the system performs the entire dynamic driving task independently, without requiring an occupant to remain ready to take control at all times.

Unlike L3 autonomous driving, which still requires a human driver to take over when prompted by the system, L4 passenger operations place the corresponding operational responsibilities on the service operator.

Technologically, XPeng is developing its Robotaxi around a production vehicle platform.

XPENG YOYO is being developed from the outset on the basis of the company’s flagship GX model.

The vehicle is equipped with four in-house-developed Turing AI chips, delivering 3,000 TOPS of effective onboard computing power.

It also uses XPeng’s second-generation VLA large model and a vision-only approach that does not rely on lidar or high-definition maps.

In August, XPeng Chairman He Xiaopeng disclosed that production-intent Robotaxis equipped with the second-generation VLA system had completed more than 2,200 internal test rides in Guangzhou.

The company had also completed the full process for passenger-carrying demonstration operations.

XPeng plans to begin fully driverless passenger operations in 2027.

Under its proposed business model, XPeng will provide partners with vehicle platforms, autonomous driving software and AI capabilities, while partners will handle on-the-ground operations.

The model could generate revenue through vehicle sales, services and commission sharing, reducing the burden on XPeng of directly building and managing a large Robotaxi fleet.

In an earlier interview with WSJ, He said XPeng expected its Robotaxi business in Guangzhou to reach single-vehicle breakeven as early as the second half of 2027.

During the Paris Motor Show, He also disclosed that XPeng was in advanced discussions with several leading European mobility platforms about Robotaxi partnerships, with further updates expected.

XPeng is also advancing overseas testing and deployment of its existing Navigation Guided Pilot (NGP) advanced driver-assistance system.

This gives the company a foundation for expanding its intelligent driving business internationally.
