NIO (NYSE:NIO) has achieved a crucial milestone with the ET9, as its SBW system has just received the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe’s E-Mark certification.

The certification was completed by Applus IDIADA from Spain, one of the world’s leading automotive technology service institutions. It is also the first time that IDIADA has certified a production vehicle equipped with SBW in Europe, with NIO becoming the first brand to do so.
Afterward, William Li shared on social media that the ET9 has become the world’s first and only production vehicle with SBW technology to obtain dual certifications from both China and Europe. This achievement not only represents recognition of the technology but also paves the way for the ET9’s future entry into overseas markets.

Looking back at the product itself, the NIO ET9 was launched in December 2024, with a starting price of 788,000 yuan. Positioned as a flagship luxury sedan, it officially began delivery in March this year. According to data from Dongchedi, the ET9 delivered 810 units in its first full month of delivery, a commendable performance.
The ET9 boasts significant technological content, featuring NIO’s self-developed “SkyRide·Air” full Steer-by-Wire intelligent chassis, which integrates SBW, full – active suspension, and rear – axle steering. It is the first production vehicle in China to be equipped with SBW.

Unlike traditional mechanical structures, the ET9’s system achieves “zero mechanical connection” between the steering wheel and the wheels, with steering actions completed via electrical signals, resulting in faster response and more delicate handling.
SBW has long been a “technological high – ground” in the industry. While many brands have experimented with concepts, few have achieved production, let alone obtained certifications. By securing European certification, NIO has not only gained a passport but also widened its lead in the intelligent chassis field.
The overseas journey of the ET9 is just beginning.
