XPeng Kicks Off First Overseas Production as X9 Rolls Off in Indonesia

The 2025 XPeng X9 has topped the sales of MPVs for two consecutive months since its April launch, and claimed the sales championship in the MPV category in Hong Kong in June.

At the recently concluded 2025 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS 2025), XPeng Motors delivered the first locally produced XPeng X9, marking the official launch of its global localization production strategy.

Indonesia, chosen as the first base for localized production, reflects XPeng’s strategic focus on the Southeast Asian market. As the most populous country in ASEAN, Indonesia saw a remarkable 15,000 units of new energy passenger cars sold last year, with the government aiming for electric vehicle sales to account for 20% of total new car sales by 2030. XPeng not only brought the X9 and G6 to the Indonesian market but also showcased cutting-edge technologies such as flying cars and AI robots, aiming to capture a share of the largest market in Southeast Asia.

Unlike many other Chinese carmakers that primarily focus on vehicle exports, XPeng is using the Completely Knocked Down (CKD) assembly model, with local partner Handal Indonesia Motor (HIM) responsible for assembly. This approach helps reduce costs, avoid hefty import tariffs, and aligns with Indonesia’s strong push for local manufacturing.

It is worth noting that HIM has extensive experience working with Chinese brands, having provided assembly services for Chery, Jetour, and Neta, among others. Earlier this year, HIM also formed a strategic partnership with Geely, laying a solid foundation for XPeng’s entry into the Indonesian market.

According to XPeng’s official data, the X9 has performed steadily in the Chinese market, ranking as the best-selling high-end all-electric MPV for two consecutive months since its April debut, and clinching the top spot in Hong Kong’s MPV category in June.

While the Indonesian market is still in its inception stage, XPeng has already delivered dozens of locally assembled vehicles and plans to rapidly expand its experience and sales network in key cities like Jakarta and Bali. The goal is to cover 70% of core city centers and 85% of high-density areas by the end of the year.

Amid intense competition in the Chinese market, XPeng is accelerating its global expansion, now present in 46 countries and regions. The brand has secured sales leadership in China’s new energy vehicle segment across 10 European countries, with total global deliveries exceeding 800,000 units.

The launch of local production in Indonesia marks a significant milestone in XPeng’s global journey, reflecting a new strategic approach for Chinese automakers on the international stage: how to quickly respond to market demands and create a more competitive smart electric vehicle brand tailored to local needs.
