NIO’s leadership in Shanghai was largely driven by strong demand for its large SUV lineup.

Data showed that the NIO ES8, ES9, together with ONVO’s L80 and L90, accounted for more than 60% of Shanghai’s large SUV segment during the first half of the year, giving the company a commanding position in the category.

The NIO ES8 has ranked as Shanghai’s best-selling large SUV for eight consecutive months since deliveries began.

A new five-seat variant, which entered deliveries on July 10, has further expanded the lineup.

The ES9 surpassed 10,000 cumulative deliveries nationwide within just 30 days of launch, while deliveries in Shanghai alone have already exceeded 1,000 units.

According to the head of sales at the NIO House Shanghai Nanxiang Impression City store, customer traffic rose around 30% year on year during the first half, while vehicle sales increased about 20%.

The ES8 and ES9 have become the dealership’s primary traffic drivers.

The five-seat ES8 has proven particularly popular with family buyers, while the six-seat ES9 has attracted a growing number of business customers.

In Shanghai’s SUV market priced above RMB 300,000 ($44,247), cumulative deliveries of the NIO ES6 and EC6 have exceeded 60,000 units, maintaining the top position in their segment since 2023.

In the premium sedan segment, combined deliveries of the ET5 and ET5 Touring (ET5T) have surpassed 30,000 units in Shanghai, maintaining steady sales momentum.

NIO’s multi-brand strategy is also beginning to generate scale benefits. Under the ONVO brand, the L60 reached its 100,000th delivery in Shanghai in June, following the start of deliveries in September 2024.

The firefly brand has continued to strengthen its position in the premium compact EV segment.

During the first half of the year, deliveries reached 29,172 units, up 271.9% year on year, giving the brand more than 55% market share in China’s premium compact vehicle segment priced above RMB 100,000 ($14,749).

NIO’s battery swap station in Shanghai

NIO’s charging and battery-swapping network remains a key pillar supporting its sales growth.

As of the end of June, the company had built more than 510 charging and battery swap stations across Shanghai, including 214 battery swap stations, completing more than 12.6 million battery swaps cumulatively.

Meanwhile, NIO has confirmed plans to begin construction of a new battery R&D center in Shanghai‘s Jiading District in H2 2026, further strengthening its research and development capabilities.

Data from CPCA showed that battery electric vehicles accounted for 42.8% of China’s passenger vehicle retail sales in June, making BEVs the country’s largest powertrain segment for a third consecutive month.

As one of the few Chinese automakers committed exclusively to BEVs across its entire lineup, NIO delivered 191,123 vehicles in H1 2026, up 67.4% year on year, outperforming the broader industry growth rate.

Separately, NIO recently announced that Wuhan received the highest number of votes to host NIO Day 2026. Based on previous editions of the event, major product announcements are expected.
