Xpeng Plans North America Expansion, Weighs Canada Before U.S. Entry

Takeaways
  • XPeng says the U.S. is a future priority but will enter only if political conditions and policies allow.
  • Canada is the immediate target as XPeng evaluates feasibility and holds talks with officials and partners.
  • In Europe XPeng leans on local partnerships and Magna assembly to speed localized production and cut costs.

XPeng Motors is preparing to enter the U.S. market when political conditions become favorable, while currently evaluating the feasibility of entering Canada, according to WardsAuto report.

During the global launch event of the XPeng MONA L03, XPeng CEO He Xiaopeng and Tang Zhikun, head of the company’s International Development and Service Center, outlined the automaker’s North American expansion plans.

Speaking at the overseas launch event for the MONA L03, He Xiaopeng said the U.S. market will be one of the key markets that XPeng must enter in the future.

He said XPeng is not only an automaker but also a technology company focused on intelligent vehicle development, and entering the North American market would help further expand the company’s growth opportunities.

However, Chinese electric vehicle companies still face significant policy barriers when entering the U.S. market.

The United States has continued to tighten restrictions on Chinese EVs and related supply chains in recent years, and XPeng acknowledged that the current market environment remains uncertain.

He Xiaopeng said that if policy conditions change in the future, XPeng would be willing to invest locally, including establishing manufacturing facilities.

Compared with the U.S., Canada has become a more immediate market under consideration for XPeng.

Tang Zhikun said during a media briefing that over the past six months, the company has maintained communication with Canadian government officials and local partners while evaluating the feasibility of entering the market.

Canada’s EV market is attracting increasing attention from Chinese automakers.

In May, the first batch of China-made Lotus Eletre vehicles was exported from Shanghai Port to Canada.

Meanwhile, companies including BYD and Tesla are also advancing their market strategies in the region. For XPeng, Canada could become an important entry point into North America.

Beyond North America, XPeng is pursuing deeper localization efforts in Europe. He Xiaopeng said local partnerships are a key part of the company’s European expansion strategy.

XPeng has already partnered with automaker Magna, with Magna’s Austrian plant responsible for assembling the G9 and G6 SUV models.

He said XPeng is in talks with European automakers on potential cooperation and hopes to leverage existing local manufacturing facilities to accelerate localized production.

Previously, Cheng Xiaoguang, managing director of XPeng’s Northeast Europe operations, revealed that the company was in discussions with Volkswagen over a potential factory acquisition.

He Xiaopeng said that compared with building new plants from scratch, sharing existing industrial resources can shorten deployment timelines and reduce investment pressure.

XPeng is currently searching for suitable locations across Europe, with Germany, particularly southern Germany, considered a key area of focus.
