BYD Wins Hong Kong Charging Site Tender to Roll Out Planned Megawatt Charging

BYD Hong Kong Co., Limited has won a tender for an electric vehicle charging site in Hong Kong, securing a 12-year land-use right to deploy a high-speed charging facility.

Hong Kong’s Lands Department announced on July 27 that the company won the tender for New Kowloon Inland Lot No. 6677 at Nos. 77 and 79 Hiu Kwong Street, Kowloon, with a bid of 12M HKD ($1.63M). The site covers around 1,022.1 square meters. It will be used to build an EV charging station.

Several companies participated in the tender, including AX Xeco and Cornerstone EV Charging Service Limited.

The site was opened for tender in April, alongside five petrol station sites in Kowloon Bay, Fo Tan, Tai Po, Tsing Yi and Tseung Kwan O. The Hong Kong government plans to convert these locations into high-speed EV charging hubs.

Hong Kong’s Environment and Ecology Bureau said the government will continue leveraging market forces to expand public charging infrastructure centered around high-speed chargers. The move aims to accelerate green transportation adoption and support the city’s target of achieving zero-emission vehicles by 2050.

ChinaEV Home believes BYD’s move may be linked to its plan to introduce BYD Megawatt Charging technology in Hong Kong.

BYD launched its second-generation BYD Megawatt Charging system in March 2026. The system works with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), delivering peak charging power of up to 1,500kW from a single charging gun.

For compatible vehicles, BYD said the system can add around 400km of range within 5 minutes under normal temperature conditions. The charging system can replenish battery capacity from 10% to 70% in around 5 minutes, and from 10% to 97% in around 9 minutes.

Notably, non-BYD vehicles can also achieve high charging efficiency at BYD Megawatt Charging stations. However, actual charging power depends on protocol compatibility between the vehicle and charging equipment.

For BYD, building its own high-speed charging network in Hong Kong could pave the way for the Denza Z sedan’s entry into the market in the fourth quarter. More BYD Megawatt Charging-enabled models are expected to follow. The rollout of a proprietary charging network could also strengthen BYD’s influence and brand recognition in Hong Kong’s EV market.

In terms of sales, BYD recorded 275 vehicle registrations in Hong Kong in June 2026. The company accumulated 5,042 registrations in the first half of the year.

BYD has already launched large-scale BYD Megawatt Charging infrastructure deployment in China. As of June 30, 2026, the company had built 7,018 BYD Megawatt Charging stations across China. Overseas, BYD has completed BYD Megawatt Charging station deployments in Germany and the UK. The company plans to expand the network to markets including Canada and Malaysia.

Under its global plan, BYD aims to build 6,000 BYD Megawatt Charging stations overseas by the end of 2026, accelerating its worldwide charging infrastructure expansion.
