China’s NEV Sales Top 1.1 Million in June 2025, Market Penetration Nears 52%

China’s NEV market grew 33% year-on-year in June, with BYD leading the pack; AITO M8 and Tesla Model Y stood out in SUV sales.

China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) market continued its upward momentum in June 2025, delivering robust growth. According to the latest domestic data released by research institute LandRoads, monthly NEV passenger vehicle sales reached 1.107 million units—up 33% year-over-year and 15% month-over-month. The NEV market share climbed to 51.9%, a slight increase from May, reinforcing the country’s accelerating shift toward electrification.

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) remained the dominant force, with June sales totaling 673,000 units, up 42% from a year ago. Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) recorded 321,000 units, marking a 31% increase, while range-extended electric vehicles (EREVs) held steady at 113,000 units. The data signals growing consumer confidence in BEVs as battery and charging infrastructure steadily improve.

At the brand level, BYD maintained its market leadership with 307,500 units sold, a 17% year-on-year increase and 20% growth from May. Popular models such as the Seagull and Song Pro DM-i contributed significantly to its strong performance. Tesla saw a 57% month-over-month surge, delivering 61,400 units—driven largely by consistent Model Y output. Meanwhile, Geely Galaxy emerged as June’s breakout performer, delivering 95,100 units, a staggering 323% increase compared to the previous year.

Among new players, AITO (Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance) posted sales of 44,300 units in June, up 4% year-over-year, with the M8 model alone accounting for over 20,000 units—cementing its lead in the large NEV SUV segment. Leapmotor continued its strong momentum with 40,500 units delivered, up 141% YoY. In contrast, Li Auto (35,800 units), NIO (13,500), and Zeekr (13,600) all posted YoY declines of 25%, 31%, and 25%, respectively, underscoring intensifying competition in the premium segment.

On the model leaderboard, the Geely Xingyuan remained the best-selling sedan with 42,900 units delivered. Xiaomi’s SU7 continued to perform steadily, posting June sales of 21,000 units and securing a top spot in the mid-to-high-end sedan market. In the SUV category, Tesla’s Model Y led with 44,000 units, followed closely by AITO’s M8, highlighting strong demand in the premium all-electric family SUV segment.

Overall, the NEV market in June showed signs of sustained recovery. While leading brands continued to consolidate their positions, mid-tier players saw increasing divergence in performance—setting the stage for heightened competition as the second half of the year unfolds.
