Leapmotor Lafa 5 Makes Global Debut, Founder Zhu Jiangming Kicks off Journey to Challenge 1 Million Annual Sales

At the IAA Mobility in Munich, Leapmotor introduced the Lafa 5, a hatchback aimed at global markets and the youth demographic.

The vehicle competes with models like the Volkswagen ID.3 and features advanced design, spaciousness, and electrification. Global sales are projected for 2026, with high expectations for performance in overseas markets.

At the IAA Mobility in Munich, Leapmotor allocated only about 20 minutes for the presentation of its new model, the Lafa 5. Nevertheless, this global-oriented product carries significant weight.

Regarding the Lafa 5, Zhu Jiangming, CEO of Leapmotor Group, emphasized two key points: it is built for the global strategy and tailored specifically for young demographics.

In terms of size and positioning, as a hatchback, the Leapmotor Lafa 5 first evokes Volkswagen’s “Golf” family when mentioned in overseas markets; among new energy vehicle (NEV) competitors, it targets the best-selling ID.3 in Europe.

Additionally, Zhu Jiangming revealed that the Lafa 5 will also offer an “Ultra” version. Official renderings show that the Lafa 5 Ultra will be equipped with a sporty body kit and a more prominent rear spoiler. This product lineup is undoubtedly reminiscent of Volkswagen’s Golf and Golf GTI.

Leapmotor stated that the Lafa 5 will first be launched in the Chinese market in the fourth quarter of this year, with global sales set to start in 2026; the Lafa 5 Ultra is tentatively scheduled for release in the first half of 2026.

As a debut at the motor show, the core task of the Leapmotor Lafa 5 at the IAA Mobility in Munich was to showcase its exterior design.

Furthermore, combined with interviews with Leapmotor’s senior management after the press conference, we can gain a clearer understanding of the Lafa 5 and Leapmotor’s global strategy.

A Pure Electric Compact Car with “European Flair”

The Leapmotor Lafa 5 is a typical compact hatchback, with dimensions of 443018801520mm and a wheelbase of 2735mm.

Zhu Jiangming repeatedly emphasized the “1880mm” width at the press conference, claiming it is the “widest in its class”. In fact, although the Leapmotor Lafa 5 is a “European-style hatchback”, it is ultimately developed based on “Chinese thinking” — its overall size is larger than that of mainstream hatchbacks in overseas markets, and its 2735mm wheelbase even reaches the level of Class A vehicles.

Beyond size, other highlights focus on the exterior design.

The Lafa 5’s front headlight cluster adopts a family-style design, featuring high recognition. From the official demonstration video, it seems to be equipped with a “light language” effect to enhance the sense of premium quality.

Moreover, the Leapmotor Lafa 5 is a model equipped with “frameless doors”. This configuration, once exclusive to vehicles priced above 200,000 RMB, has gradually become a “standard feature” in Chinese NEVs.

Another noteworthy configuration: the Lafa 5 will be equipped with 19-inch wheels, though Leapmotor has not clearly stated whether this is a standard or optional feature.

Finally, Leapmotor announced five color options for the Lafa 5, among which “Electric Flash Yellow” and “Wind Speed Grey” are exclusive colors.

As for the Lafa 5 Ultra, as briefly mentioned earlier, this version focuses more on high performance and sporty tuning, along with a more aggressive exterior design. Naturally, it is expected to have a higher price tag.

Other configurations were also briefly mentioned: the Leapmotor Lafa 5, like the Leapmotor B10, is built on the LEAP 3.5 platform, which means it boasts relatively advanced electrification performance, and its handling is also worth looking forward to.

The lidar mounted on the roof indicates that the Lafa 5 will be equipped with Leapmotor’s latest advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), and it is highly likely to support full-scenario navigation-assisted driving capabilities.

Regarding pricing, a major concern for the public, Zhu Jiangming emphasized that Leapmotor has always adopted cost-based pricing. The Lafa 5 will also inherit this “excellent tradition” of previous models, and it is believed to bring surprises to the market.

What Are Its Chances of Success?

Although Leapmotor has only released initial information about the Lafa 5, its ambition is evident. By making its debut with a “European Style” at the prestigious European motor show, the Leapmotor Lafa 5 is clearly targeting competitors such as the Volkswagen ID.3 and BMW MINI.

Therefore, during the group interview after the conference, one of the top concerns from the outside world was: what are the advantages of the Lafa 5?

In response, Cao Li, Senior Vice President of Leapmotor, stated that “electrification and intelligentization”, along with space performance and comfort, will be the Lafa 5’s greatest strengths.

However, limited by the currently released information, a direct comparison with competitors is not yet possible. If we take models from the same-platform B-series as a reference — the B01 is built on a 400V platform, while the B10 supports 800V fast charging — the Lafa 5 will undoubtedly have a significant advantage over products like the ID.3 if it also supports 800V fast charging.

As for “intelligentization” and “space performance” — especially the former — Cao Li believes that currently, ADAS in overseas markets is still mainly at the L2 level, and Leapmotor will first focus on solidifying L2 basic capabilities. Of course, Cao Li emphasized that Leapmotor’s ADAS solutions for overseas markets will still be independently developed by the company.

There is no need to elaborate on “space performance”, as it is a traditional strength of Chinese NEVs. Cao Li added that in order to compete with rivals in the European market, the chassis tuning of the Lafa 5 has fully considered local needs — it does not necessarily pursue high horsepower or extreme performance, but rather focuses more on driving experience and handling.

When talking about the sales expectations of the Lafa 5 in overseas markets, Zhu Jiangming was relatively optimistic and took the opportunity to recall Leapmotor’s early development history.

From the S01 to the T03 and C11, Zhu Jiangming said he was very anxious in the early stages. The annual sales volume of the T03 was only 10,000 units in the first year, then rose to 43,000 units in 2021. It was not until 2022, with the addition of the C11, that the brand’s total sales reached 117,000 units, allowing Zhu Jiangming to finally feel at ease.

The significance of recalling this history is that he believes patience is required for the performance of overseas markets. At the same time, Leapmotor also has high hopes for the Lafa 5, expecting it to grow into a pillar of sales, just like the C11 did back then.

Zhu Jiangming also put forward a judgment: he believes that an “annual sales volume of 4 million units” is the threshold for a “global automaker”. In addition to the Lafa 5, which is highly anticipated, Leapmotor will also launch 5 to 7 new models in overseas markets next year to meet more diverse demands.

Leapmotor is also accelerating its operations in overseas markets. Through its cooperation with Stellantis, Leapmotor has already established 1,700 distribution stores overseas, while the number of domestic Leapmotor stores is only around 900.

With the rapid expansion of sales channels and the intensive launch of new models, Zhu Jiangming is very confident that Leapmotor’s overseas development will enter a fast track.

Regarding next year’s sales performance, Leapmotor’s expectation is that “domestic sales will double next year, and overseas sales will at least double”.

Leapmotor naturally has its own confidence to put forward such an expectation. The company revealed that its current daily order volume has exceeded 5,000 units, and its monthly overseas sales are approximately 4,000 units. Zhu Jiangming’s implication is that there is still significant room for growth in overseas markets.

He predicted that the key milestone of “100,000 monthly sales” will be achieved next year. From this perspective, the previously set target of “1 million annual sales by 2026” seems rather conservative.
