XPeng Recalls 33,473 X9 MPVs in China Over Front Air Spring Defect

XPeng is recalling 33,473 X9 vehicles after China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) approved a recall plan filed by Zhaoqing XPeng New Energy Investment Co., Ltd. on July 24.

Beginning on August 28, 2026, the recall covers certain X9 vehicles manufactured between August 8, 2023, and August 11, 2025.

According to the recall notice, manufacturing process variations may have reduced the airtightness of the front air springs on some vehicles.

After prolonged use in high-temperature and high-humidity environments, the front air springs may develop slow air leaks, triggering warning lights and fault messages.

In extreme cases, the issue could affect vehicle handling, creating a potential safety risk.

To address the issue, XPeng will replace the front air spring strut assemblies on affected vehicles free of charge.

Vehicles that have already received the improved replacement parts will not require further repairs.

The company said affected owners will be notified through the XPeng mobile app and telephone calls.

The recall follows a series of air suspension failures reported on the X9 earlier this month.

During a prolonged heatwave in July, when temperatures in cities including Chongqing exceeded 40°C, multiple owners reported front air suspension leaks while driving.

The failures caused one side or the entire vehicle body to sag, in some cases leaving the vehicles unable to continue operating.

On July 15, XPeng issued a public apology via official community, attributing the problem to manufacturing process variations at a supplier.

The company also extended warranty coverage for the X9’s front air spring system from five years or 120,000 km to eight years or 160,000 km, with the warranty remaining valid regardless of changes in vehicle ownership.

The formal recall marks the next phase in resolving the X9 air suspension issue after weeks of public attention.

This is not XPeng’s first major recall in recent years.

Last September, the company recalled 47,490 P7+ vehicles after poor contact in the steering assist motor sensor wiring harness was found to potentially cause a loss of power steering assistance, posing a safety risk.

The two large-scale recalls have renewed attention on quality control for precision components used in new energy vehicles.

While XPeng has implemented corrective measures, the recurrence of large-scale component defects highlights the importance of manufacturing consistency alongside advanced hardware in maintaining long-term consumer confidence.
