Takeaways
  • BYD’s new 8-Series Tang is a larger midsize-to-large all‑electric SUV with a 2,950 mm wheelbase and five seats.
  • The Tang claims over 800 km pure EV range and 300 kW rear motor with Megawatt Charging and ultra-fast second‑gen Blade Battery.
  • BYD prices预计 around RMB 200K–220K, aiming to revive Tang sales and compete with Li Auto i6 and AITO M6.

Today, BYD Dynasty series general manager Lu Tian shared official images of the “8-Series Tang” on social media, marking the start of the new SUV’s pre-launch campaign.

The new Tang adopts BYD’s latest family design language, continuing the brand’s “Dragon Face” styling theme. The front end features a closed grille, a full-width light bar, and a Tang Chinese character badge integrated into the hood edge. A LiDAR sensor is visible on the roof, while the overall front profile remains close to the previously launched DaTang, with a cleaner design approach.

Compared with the current Tang, the new model receives a major front-end redesign. The existing version uses a larger grille with more chrome elements, while the new model adopts a sealed front fascia for a more integrated appearance.

The side profile features dual waistlines with sharper contours. The door handles switch to a semi-hidden design, while the A- to D-pillars receive black treatment to create a floating-roof effect. The current Tang uses traditional pull-type handles, with a softer, more rounded side profile.

At the rear, the new Tang adopts redesigned full-width taillights. The light clusters feature a Chinese knot-inspired pattern similar to the DaTang model, while the BYD badge sits below the taillight strip on a black trim panel. Official images show an optional white roof, creating a two-tone body design.

The new Tang has already been filed with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. It measures 5,045 mm in length, 1,980 mm in width, 1,760 mm in height, with a 2,950 mm wheelbase. By comparison, the current Tang measures 4,870 mm, 1,950 mm, 1,725 mm, with a 2,820 mm wheelbase.

The new model gains 130 mm in wheelbase, moving it into the same size category as the Tang L(BYD Atto 8).

In terms of positioning, Lu Tian said the two models will target different markets. The 8-Series Tang will be positioned as a midsize-to-large SUV with a five-seat layout, focusing on family users. The 9-Series DaTang will serve as a full-size SUV with a seven-seat layout, targeting business users and larger families.

The currently filed version is an all-electric model. It features a single motor with a maximum output of 300 kW and a top speed of 250 km/h. The rear badge indicates support for BYD’s Megawatt Charging technology.

The model is expected to adopt the second-generation Blade Battery with fast-charging capability, enabling a 10% to 97% charge in nine minutes. Lu Tian said the new Tang will deliver more than 800 km of pure electric range.

The roof-mounted LiDAR sensor and “God’s Eye B” intelligent driving badge suggest the vehicle will feature BYD’s advanced driver assistance system, supporting urban and highway navigation functions.

Based on BYD’s current pricing structure, the 8-Series Seal 08 starts at RMB 196.9K ($29.1K), while the 9-Series DaTang EV starts at RMB 239.9K ($35.4K). Positioned between the two models, the 8-Series Tang is expected to start around RMB 200K-220K ($29.5K-$32.5K).

The pricing range will put the new Tang directly against models such as the Li Auto i6 and AITO M6.

Tang remains one of BYD’s most important SUV nameplates. From 2022 to 2024, annual Tang sales reached 151K units, 137K units, and 141K units respectively.

However, as competition intensified in the family SUV market, the Tang lost momentum in 2025, with annual sales falling to 68K units amid growing competition from newer rivals.

The launch of the new-generation Tang aims to revive the product line through a full redesign. Recent market reports suggested BYD may discontinue its “L” series models, including Tang L. The new Tang could fill the gap left by the lineup adjustment.
